Joan Didion’s illustrate to readers about “WHY I WRITE” by saying, “All I knew then was what I wasn’t and it took me some years to discover, by which I mean not a “good writer or a “bad” writer but simply a writer, a person whose most absorbed and passionate hours are spent arranging words on pieces of paper.” Being a good writer takes patients and practice. I don’t write as much as I use to, but I do like to write. I mostly write in a journal than typing it on the computer. “Writing is the process of using symbols to communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form.” I use to just sit in my room and make up stories about stupid things, but it made sense to me even if other people didn't understand my writing. I never used writing as a therapy, it was more of a hobby for me because I was able to write whatever was in my mind without nobody else able to read it. “ I guess you can call me a closet writer, but that was when I was a little girl.” Now, being a grown women I don’t mind letting people see my writing. I like to hear other people’s criticism and opinions on my writing it helps me write better. I wrote a lot``last semester. We had about 3 essay, a midterm, and a final, and boy was it challenging for me but I got through it and that’s all that matters. I still have a lot of growing to do in my writing. There is one more thing that I do not like and that is texting. I would rather talk on the phone and say what I have to say then text it. I like to get straight to the point. http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/whitmanhs/academics/english/Why%20I%20Write%20Didion.pdf In this article Carol Chute reflects on how she tries to get writing done, but everything around her is keeping her from doing so. Carol typewriter was calling for her but everytime she wanted to attend to it someone was either coming over her house for some advice, or the dogs were barking at anybody that came to the door. Hemingway thought “sitting too much will kill you.” Hemingway “ he would stand at his typewriter at a desk overflowing with books and notes and write first on paper attached to clipboard.” Hemingway of writing was to “captured each day on a large cardboard chart placed below a mounted gazelle head.” As a college student I have been facing many challenges when writing a paper. I Tend to still struggle with grammar, and knowing when and where to put my commons. I had to write a cartoon editorial essay and it was not easy for me. I constantly was distracted by trying to write an introduction to each paragraph and then write 5 to 6 sentences on what the introduction was about. I believe I can become a better writer I just need to know how to become a better writer. If I read more I can definitely become a better writer. I’m always thinking I just don’t write it down all the time. You have to be a logical thinker at times and that’s what I’m working on now. It just doesn’t come natural, you have to put in some effort in becoming a better writer. I want to start analyzing and digging deeper in my writing. One way to avoid distraction is finding a quiet room at home that has window to maybe help you think and gather your thoughts more clearly. Balance a healthy meals. Try at least to get 8hrs of sleep. Read on some books that talks about “How to avoid being distracted while trying to become a better writer.” Carry a notebook that you would like to write in, that can distract you from getting on your cell phone or computer. Maybe try taking daily walks get your mind right. Don’t forget to take care of your priorities first. There are many ways to avoid distractions, you just have to find what works for you. Hemingway said, “If a writer stops observing he is finished.”
