Eng 100 Assignment #3: Film Based Arguement Due: Draft #1 posted to blog by 3/23/17 Survivor In the film, Survivor, screenwriter Philip Shelby writers about Kate Abbott struggles with saving America from a terrorist attack. Abbott is a security service agent who learns of a plot where a sniper will shoot a gas bomb in Time Square in an attempt to kill innocent civilians. Thesis statement: How can Kate Abbott determine trustworthy? “Many people believe that you can tell if someone is lying by the direction of where their eyes go: up to the right for the truth, up to the left for a lie. http://www.wikihow.com/Determine-if-Someone-Is-Trustworthy.Abbott went to ask Dr. Balan a few questions he would look away everytime. Abbott knew there was something going on at that moment. She did not know if she could trust what Dr. Balan was saying. Kate Abbott is a Diplomatic Security Service agent working for the American Embassy in London. Abbott started working for the government after her friends were killed in the 9/11 attack. Because of Abbott skills and knowledge, she learns of a plot where a sniper will shoot a gas bomb in Time Square in an attempt to kill innocent civilians. While Abbott investigated the visa applications her colleagues were killed while attending Bill who is the superior birthday party. Bill was late attending his birthday party he wanted to be sneaky and delete all of the visa applications after he approved all the applicants. He was being blackmailed and knew that if he didn’t accomplish his task they were going to kill his son. Now they had this guy called “Watchmaker” (Pierce Brosnan), who was one of the most wanted killers known. Abbott leading employee Sam Parker and Sally were the only two Abbott could trust anybody at this point. Abbott didn’t understand at first why this guy was trying to kill her. Sam and Sally were the only two that knew she was innocent and would do anything to help her. Abbott had to do some of her own research to find out why Watchmaker was after her. As Abbott wandered through London she was a target everywhere she went because Watchmaker was able to keep tabs on her where abouts by using a device that he created. Although Kate was being target and wanted by the police department, it did not stop her from trying to save the civilians in the United States. America have a tendency to trust the people that they think are their friends or have their best interest. Society have trusted to many of the wrong people. We trusted the different presidents who we thought were going to change the highs and the lows of America. We allowed man to tell us that if you choose me as a president I will make things better for America. People want you to trust them, but then they give you all the reasons not to by doing something wrong or untrustworthy. Trustworthy is to study their body language and how they present themselves. When Abbott interviewed Dr. Balan, do you think that she studied his body language or did she assume he was up to no good? I feel she was watching his body language. If you pay attention to how she looks at him as she asked him questions. Notice he tries not to give her complete eye contact. That moment she knew something was wrong. Even when she got home from work and she called her colleague Naomi, she knew something was not right with those visa application. After the explosion, Abbott attempts to find out the cause of the explosion, and found out that Bill was being blackmailed to let certain visa applicants through after his son was taken, and man behind the attack was the “Watchmaker.” Now at that moment Abbott did not know that Bill was untrustworthy, until he tried to kill her. It’s funny how you think you can trust someone until they betray your trust. Abbott had to go through some obstacles, and trusting people was one of them. Abbotts thoughts were fast thinking, courage, and most of all rescuing civilians from Time Square. In the midst of Abbott's struggles to get to the United States she had no choice but to trust Sally and Sam to help her, even though Sam got hurt in the process Abbott's goal is to stop the terrorist from attacking Time Square on New Year's Eve even if it means risking her own life. In Conclusion Abbott had to determine who she could trust, by investigating applicants. She was able to trust Sam most of all because he was one of the only ones beside Sally who knew she was good at her job, and that she was innocent. Nevertheless she persisted on stopping the terrorist from bombing Time Square, and she succeeded that task. I feel if your going to trust somebody you need to get to know them first. Abbott didn’t really know who she could trust at the beginning, but she was able to find out who was trustworthy, and who wasn’t. Abbott courageousness and dedication saved a lot of civilians lives.
